NATIVE BUSH DESTROYED
AREA NEAR TAPU. THAMES, Jan. 23. The beautiful native bush at the Tapu end of the Tapu Hill was destroyed by fire during last night. The land is Crown property vested in the State Forestry Department. Sev-
cral motorists who witnessed the destruction of the bush said it was an awe-inspiring sight. The whole hillside was ablaze. Burning trees which fell across the highway caused a temporary blockage of traffic. At one stage five lorries and a car were held up. A large rata tree fell directly in front of one lorry and many pungas, blazing fiercely, came crashing to earth.
The motor drivers, with the assist ance of County Council employee?, had a hot task jacking the burning trees and logs off the highway, which is now clear for traffic again.
