JOCKEYS AND TRAINERS

ANNUAL CRICKET MATCH. INTERESTING SIIIEUD FIXTURE. i Played on Peat Park in glorious weather on Friday, the annual cricket match for the Wanganui Jockey Club Stewards’ Shield resulted in a win for the jockeys, who defeated the trainers' eleven decisively in a well-contested match. The gmne, played in the real cricketing spirit, was watched with keen interest by many spectators, who obtained much entertainment from the displays of both teams. Al. the conclusion of the match the captain of the jockeys’ team, L. Dulieu, accepted from Mr. (). Hales, one. of the umpires, the Shield which had been at stake. The captain of the | trainers’ team was \V. IE Dwyer. During the afternoon light refresh- | incuts on a generous scale, supplied bv the Wanganui .Jockey Club, providedan equally enjoyable feature, of the I gathering, and all voted the match a 1 happy inspiration. The jockeys started off disastrously, the first two wickets falling before .'coring coninieiifeil, and the third went with but a single run on the board. With five wickets down for 14 prospects did not appear bright, and the outlook was still worse when the sixth | fell at 16, but a stand by Reed and Lambess brought about a. change, the pair being still together at the I luncheon adjournment with 68 on the telegraph. Reed went first ball on the resumption but Lambess. carried on and was still unbeaten with a halfcentury to his credit when the last wicket fell at IB). The most successful trundler for the trainers was Sonthee, who took four wickets for 28, but Pine took three for 26 and Hatch’s “bag’’ was three for 47. The lastnamed bowler proved a tiger for work, and if he had been permitted might have bowled from both ends. Among the balls sent down by Hatch were one or two almost perfect examples of those bumpers which proved so unpopular across the Tasman. The trainers were unable to head off the jockeys’ total, having to be content with 71, of which L. G. Morris I contributed 15 before being run out and L. G. Butler 21. The episode ini which Al orris was run out was one of the most entertaining of the match, for he and A. .Jenkins arrived ait the same end simultaneously, went back and then tried again, the incident having a most laughable end, though disastrous for the Marton trainer. In their second essay the jockeys did better still with ’154, while the trainers, in their second visi't to the wickets, made 73 runs. A feature of the jockeys’ howling was the fact that they tried out 10 of the 'team with the I rail her. Scores were as follow: J ockeys. First Inning.'. W. J. Broughton, e Jarvis, b Southee o T.
