"VERMIN INFEST BRAKPAN CELLS ”

COMPLAINT IN COURT BY ATTORNEY. JOHANNESBURG, Dec. 17. The Brakpan police cells were condemned yesterday by Mr. A. L. Reitz, an attorney defending in a case heard by Mr. R. M. W. Hawes in the Brakpan Magistrate’s Court. Referring to the accused, William Balmer (27), a miner, who spent Thursday night Ju one of the cells, Mr. Reitz said: “This man is swollen all over because of the vermin that infest the cells.” Mr. Hawes was shown Balmer’s arm, which had marks of insect bites. The magistrate said he would take note of Mr. Reit’s complaint and would get in touch with the officer commanding. Balmer was arrested in terms of a notice in the police gazette staling that he had deserted from the s.s. City of Exeter at Durban on June 14, 1934, and been declared a prohibited immigrant. Ho was remanded until December 18. Bail was fixed at £5O.
