ASHHURST CUP

WON BY EMINENT BLACK MAN'S HACK EVENT SPRINT TO WASTELAND. (Special to “Chronicle”) The weather was fine but breezy for the Ashhurst-Pohangina Racing Club’s annual meeting yesterday aud the attendance was particularly good. The totalisator handled £9017 10s as compared with £lO,BBB 10s last year. Tareha Wins Hurdles Some bad jumping was seen in the hurdles, both the winner and the second horse being guilty on occasions. Headland was the early leader from Diamond and Conference. Going through the straight the first time the leaders had come back to the others and Diamond showed the way past the stands, followed by Headland, Tareha, Sir bpear, Conference and Blacksmith. They were well bunched going into the back, but at the five furlongs Taieha, followed by Headland, drew out with Blacksmith in third place. Then Sir Spear set it alight and with a fast run joined Headland in behind Tareha. The leaders were unchanged into the straight and Sir Spear and Headland immediately challenged the pacemaker, uho was going comfortably. Tafeha ran down, the last fence, Sir Spear, who was following, being checked. Headland was in. third place and the others out of the picture. In the run to the judge Tareha was not in danger and he won by a length and a-quarter from Sir Spear with Headland a length and a-half further back. Con ference was fourth, followed by Diamond and Blacksmith. An inquiry into the incident at the last fence was held after the race and the judicial committee eventually decided that, though there had been some interference by Tareha and Headland with Sir Spear, such interference had been accidental and not sufficient to have, warranted an alteration in the placings. Wasteland Surprises Souchong was favourite for the sprint but he was last to l.ntxe the barrier and finished out or a place. Hunting Lodge was first away, followed by Wasteland, Navaho and Bodyline- At the iar turn Hunting Lodge, Navaho and Souchong were racing almost abreast two lengths ahead ol Wasteland, Bodyline and Courtegu. Hunt the Slipper was tailed off, Hume, his jockey, having lost an iron, an experience he had had in the preliminary, when the lleather broke. The order was much (he same into the straight, where the leaders swung wide, letting Wasteland right through on the fence. In the run to the judge Wasteland got a break on the others and finished very well winning from Bodyline by a

couple of lengths, wiia Courtega, who nearly stole a march on Bodyline's rider, a h-ead away third. Hunting Lodge was fourth, followed by Navaho and Souchong. Land Tax Scores Land Tax was preferred to Aussie Ra for the Komako Hack and when shaken up in the straight she drew right away to win easily by nearly four lengths from Secrecy, who finished fast to cut Full Throttle out of second money. Land Tax, Full Throttle and Arena were first to break the line aud after a furlong Full Throttle was leading, followed by Arena, Secrecy, Land Tax and Koreroa, Royal Record and Passion Flower, with Aussie Ra next. Revival moved up on the outer on the turn and Full Throttle and Arena led to the straight just ahead of Land Tax and Secrecy, with Passion Flower Revival, Koreroa and Royal Record next. Land Tax took charge at the distance and won as she liked. In a great race for second Secrecy finished well to beat Full Throttle by half a length. Arena was only half a head further back, fourth, and tb m came Koreroa, Revival and Aussie Ra.

Eminent’s Brilliant Win Cuddle and Speed were the only Cup scratchings and in a good betting race Lalla Quex was preferred to Hunting Jay and Passion Fruit. Tiger Gain was fourth in the betting order and after leading all the way he was topped off by Eminent just short of the post. Going out of the straight the first time the order was Tiger Gain, from True Shaft, Lalla Quex, Hazoor, Pango (under a good hold) and Passion Fruit. The order was still the same going into the back. Lalla Quex started to drift about the five, where Eminent went up quickly on the outer and Passion Fruit also improved. Crossing the top the leaders were Tiger Gain, followed by Pango, Hazoor, Eminent and Vertigern and the order was much the same into the straight. Tiger Gain still had charge a hundred yards from the post, but Eminent was challenging and he finished brilliantly to win by a head from Tiger Gain. Hazoor got iiiird money two lengths away from Tiger Gain, and there was a gap to Pango ahead of Vertigern, Brambletorn, Passion Fruit and Hunting Jay. Note Issue’s First Win Of thu t.iiiteeii Matters in the No\ Uc Stakes, the public wenl fur Leprechaun, Note Issue and Uaziine in that order. After some trouble at the po.-t lhey went away together, Note Issue, i-.ctn ally from tire back of the held, taking the early lead. They had not gone lar, however, when Leprechaun was in (barge from Note Issue, with Bazuine, Merlyn, Cloudy Bay and Eka Tcre following. Bazaine joined Leprechaun crossing the top and the pair turned for home ahead of Note. Issue, Alerlyn and Pukeko. Note Issue quickly assumed command aud she had the race safe at the half-distance, winning nicely by a length and a-half from Eka Tore, who had come through from well back to beat Cloudy Bay for second, the mar gin between them being a length. Lep lechaun was fourth, then Bazaine, Ala koi, Pukeko and Alerlyn. Black Man’s Decisive Win Black Alan was favourite for the' Gorge Hack Cup, and with 9.1 in the 'saddle he carried his backers through after being confidently ridden by L. Jarvis, his trainer, who received both the stop watch and the riding whip, ,

Lapel, King’s Lancer and Black Man began best aud when tue field hud settled down Dorauu moved forward tu lead into the back, followed by King's Lancer, Black Alan, Lavina, Weronia and Alby. The last-named moved up into third position passing thv live, and the order crossing the top was Dorado, from King’s Lancer, Alby, Black Alan, Lavina and Werohia. There was no change into the straight and as soon as heads were turned for home Black Man issued his challenge. He was in charge a furlong from th-e post’ and went on to win nicely by a length and a-half from King’s Lancer with Dorado two and a-half lengths further back. Boudoir was fourth and then caino Lapel, Alby, Lavina, Miss Hushabye and Werohia. Land Tax Wins Again Land Tax was re-handicapped to carry 9-8 in the Siberia Hack, a fivefurlong flutter, but the weight did not stop her, for she won very nicely after being well placed to the straight. Grumpy and Abbey Feale were first away from Royal Record, Secrecy and Land Tax. After they had gone a furlong Grumpy and Abbey Feale were together in front with Secrecy, on the fence, Land Tax and Royal Record in lino about two lengths away, and this was maintained into the straight, where Land Tax came up on the outer and went on to win well by over a length from Secrecy. Abbey Feale was a good length away, third, and Royal Record was fourth, followed by Grumpy amt Dollar Bill. S. Anderson, the rider of the winner, was given an ovation when he returned to the birdcage. The Last to Speed Speed was favourite for the voncluding event and duly won. I’ladic was the pacemaker, being followed into the straight by Hunting Jay, Speed and Stitch, with Navaho making a iatc run. A great finish was staged, Speed wearing down Hunting Jay to win by a neck, with Navaho another neck behind Hunting Jay. I’ladie x.a.s iojilu. Details of results are:— HACK HURDLES HANDICAP.
