JTJROUGH AFFAIRS The monthly meeting of the Taihape Borough. Council was Held on 1* riduy evening, wnen His Worship the Mayor (Mr. L. 15. H- de Lautour), occupied the chair. Also present were Crs. Loader, Butler, Darveil, Wii.'her, Sinclair AiacDiarmid, Kyau. Ihe report of the Domain and Cemetery Committee read as follows: — “That, the caretaker's report, dated January 11, 193 a, be reierred to the council for consideration aud approval. Daivill said he thought that the A. and P. Association would legat'd the clause as a direct ‘‘hit” at them, and he would like the assurance cf the council that such was not the cast- He considered that the clause was not necessary. Cr. Wilsher (chairman of the Domains and Cemeteiy Committee): Nothing is aimed at the A. and P. Association or any other particular body. Everybody will be treated alike. The Mayor: 1 think the clause will cause unpleasantness and we don’t want that. 1. is not the aim of the Domains Committee to “hit” at any organisation. The resolution requiring bodies using the Domain to deposit £IU has been on the books for some time, but it has not beeu enforced. However. I would like to see the clause deleted, as it might cause ill feeling between the council and bodies requiring the use of the Oval Domain. Cr. Butler moved that the clause be deleted. Cr. Ryan seconded the motion, which was carried. A good deal of discussion centred round the clause which recommended that camping by sideshowmen, or others on any portion of the Oval Domain, be definitely not permitted. Cr. Ryan moved an amendment that camping be allowed the night before and the night of the show. Cr. Darvill seconded the amendment.

Cr. Mac Diarmid moved a further amendment that camping be permitted on the night of the show and the night before, only in cases where it is impossible to erect and dismantle the show in one day, and then only at the dis cretion of the chairman of the Domains Committee and the Borough caretaker. Cr. Ryan withdrew his amendment and seconded that moved by Cr. MasDiarmid. Cr. Wilsher moved that the council provide a nightwatchman and that no camping be allowed. The Mayor: Why should the council provide a nightwatchman? Cr. Butler moved a further amendment that it be pointed out tiiat there was nothing to debar sideshowmen from working on the erection or dismantling of their plant on the night before the show and the night of the show; also that they could provide a nightwatchman to guard their property. Cr. Butler’s amendment was carried.
