OTTAWA AGREEMENTS

THE ISSUE IN CANADA. COALING FEDERAL ELECTIONS. VANCOUVER, Dec. 20. With the approach of a Federal general election, and signs of a return of the Liberals, the fate of the Ottawa agreements is believed to be doubtful. Mr. Macknzie King is determined to reopen the question of a reciprocal trade treaty with the United States and to reduce the tariff. He says there will necessarily be a readjustment of the Empire treaties. Air. Bennett is agreeable to consider negotiations that President Roosevelt Or his Government may make for reciprocal trade, but not, he says, at the expense of the agreements signed at the last Empire Conference. Air. Bennett is so pleased at the result of the agreements, in the improvement of intra-Empire trade that they have

caused, that he would make them the main issue at the election. Meanwhile, the United States has ceased to make any gesture toward reciprocal trade and tariff reduction, in view of Mr. Afackenzie King’s reiterated promise to whittle down the general tariff.
