FARMER’S DEATH
DROWNED IN RIVER. [ Per FreM Association. ’ CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 18. Malcolm Bruce Smith, a farmer, of Cheviot, aged 37, was drowned while fording the VVaian River about 4.20 p.m. to-day. Smith, with a boy, Lester Pain, aged 13, was driving a mob of cows over the river, w’hich was fairly low. All the cows save two had been driven across and Smith went back for these. He was driving them over when Pain saw horse and rider disappear. They reappeared with Smith clinging to the saddle but again disappeared. Smith was not seen again. It is believed the horse stepped over a ledge into a deep pool.
