CITY RATES

REBATE PERIOD CONCLUDES TOTAL OF 43.2 PER CENT. PAID. CITY’S GENERAL FUND IN CREDIT. Friday last was “discount day” in the Wanganui City Council’s offices, when £14,460 was paid by ratepayers in settlement of their obligations in the way of rates for the current financial year, this sum bringing the total paid since the date of demand up to £43,004, or 43.2 per cent, of the total levy. It also had the effect of placing the council’s District Fund Account in credit to the extent of £7lBO. That account has not been in credit since March, 1932, and on that occasion it was in that state for four days only. In February, 1929, the account was in ci edit for a short while, the maximum bo:ng £2849. Kate demands were issued this year on August 15 and the total amount received during tile month was £43,004, the town clork (Mr. G. Murch) stated .yesterday. The greater portion of that was paid in during the final three days of the rebate period, the takings being: Wednesday, £4325; Thursday, £8837; Friday, £14.460; a total of £27,622 for the three days. “This year the rate demands were issued nearly six weeks earlier than the former year, when delay was occasiond by reason of objections to valuations being held up to be dealt with by the Assessment Court, Mr. Murch proceeded. The total amount received within the period of 30 days for the previous year’s rates was £47.428. representing 44.7 per cent, of the total levy by the city and the Harbour Board. This year the amount, £43,004 represents 43.2 per cent., which must be regarded as highly satisfactory in view of the fact that the rates were levied six weeks earlier. The total levy by the city is £6784 less than last year. “The following is a comparison of the annual levy, date of demand, and the amount and percentage of rates received within 30 days from demand:— 1930- —City rates £115,717: harbour rates £10,044: total £125,761; date of demand July 26: total paid in during 30 days, £35,900; percentage 28.5. 1931- City, £107,517; harbour, £9753; total £117,270; date of demand Julv 18; total paid in during 30 days, £33.700; percentage 28.7. 1’93’2-33.— Citv, £107.401: harbour, £12,172: total £119,573; date of demand October 19; total paid in during 30 days, £48,890; percentage 40.9. 1933- —Citv, £96,778; harbour, £9315; total £106,093; date of demand, November 6; amount collected during 30 days, £47.420; percentage 44.7. 1934- City. £89,994; harbour, £9,079; total £99.573; date of demand, August 15; amount collected during 30 days, £43,004; percentage 43.2 per cent. “It is also pleasing to report that as a result of the collection of rates the district fund account to-day is in credit to the extent of £7lBO after making payment of £4700 to the Harbour Board for its share of the collections. This is the first occasion since March, 1932, that the council’s general account has been in credit, and then for a period of four days only, the highest credit being £1539. Tn February, 1929, the account was in credit for short while, the maximum being £2849.
