BOXING AT CHRISTCHURCH
BANTAMWEIGHT TITLE WRIGHT WINS NARROWLY [ Per Press Association ] CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 4. George Wright (holder) defeated Percy Hawes (challenger) on points in a professional boxing contest here tonight in which the New Zealand bantamweight championship was at stake. Wright won very narrowly on points after a 15-round contest full of fierce exchanges at close and long range. Wright’s forcing tactics in the middle stages carried the day. Hawes was out on his feet at one stage but rallied and more than held his own in the last four rounds. It was announced that the contest was the last Wright will fight.
