ON WANGANUI TRACKS

SPRING PREPARATIONS. YESTERDAY’S OPERATIONS. (By “Kestrel.”) With the Wanganui Jockey Club's spring meeting just over a week ahead, and the first day’s acceptance due to close on Friday night, the work on the local tracks is assuming a more important aspect, the Wanganui-trained contingent contributing valuable support to the programme. Yesterday morning the weather was springlike for track operations and conditions were much better than had been the experience for several weeks past. Number one track was used For all fast work. Alcides and Sunce were sent off from the five-furlong post but were not required to make fast time for the distance. taking a shade over 14sec for the first furlong, 41 2-ssec for three and 67 5-ssec for the full distance. Midian was let off with two solid rounds of pacework. Spiral and Pomp were associated in a bout over six furlongs, being clocked to cover the distance in Imin l-7sec., with the first furlong taking 14'sec. It was quite a satisfactory gallop, and neither was kicked out Pace work was the lot of Entail and Amante, separately. Burnish was a little ahead of Canopy at the finish of five furlongs, which took them 63 4-ssec, the first furlong being covered in 12 4-ssec. Canopy finished on well. J. Lowe, who arrived on Monday from Trentham, sent Red Sun over several flights of the battens but it was not altogether a satisfactory display, no doubt because the gelding did not have a schooling companion. After getting over the two flights in the straight Red Sun would not jump the hurdle at the back. Taken back after baulking he unseated his rider, who brought him on to jump the first two flights again. Korokio Artful 'Dodger and Dawn Princess did useful work.
