THEFT CHARGES

( Per Press Association ). s INVERCARGILL, Sept. 3. n Tn the Police Court to-day, Cecil h Lawrence Gilbertson, aged 32, formerly ( clerk in the employ of the Southland n County Council, appeared on remand on 28 charges of theft and forgery. After r) evidence lasting for the greater part j of the*day had been taken, the magistrate suggested that in view of other charges in which Gilbertsop was ’’ jointly involved, and which would bo / taken on Wednesday, no plea should yet be entered. Mr. Eustace Russell, who represented e accused, concurred, and the case was held over till Wednesday, bail again being fixed at £lOO. Charles Martin Todd, also a former ’’ employee of the council, appeared on IS remand charged with the theft of £52 e 19s 2d from the council, and was further remanded till Wednesday. ,r There were 14 counts against Gilbertson of theft as a servant of the council, the total amount involved being £l6 Ils 9d, and there were 14 ’ charges of forging pay sheets in resped of each amount, it being alleged that the name of A. E. Dowdall was j used on the sheets with intent that the e signature be acted upon as if it were . genuine. v ==========
