STARTLED COURT
JUROR MAKES MISTAKE. SHAKES HANDS WITH ACCUSED. Tn the presence of an astonished constable and warder, one of the jurors in •a criminal trial in Melbourne recently shook hands cordially with the prisoner as he entered the Court. The matter was mentioned by the Crown Prosecutor to Judge Williams when the Court opened. In the witness box, a constable said that, when a juror entered lhe Court, he looked round and, seeing the accused sitting in a corner, said, “How are von?” and shook hands with him. When the constable told the juror that he had shaken hands with the prisoner, he looked startled, and said, “By Jove, L have made, a terrible mistake.” Stating that he was convinced that > the juror had made an honest mistake, the Judge directed that the trial should proceed.
