AUCKLAND BY-LAW A PROTEST MEETING ( Pec Press Association ). AUCKLAND, Sept- 3. A public meeting, over which Pro fessor H. Belshavv presided, la<st ever ing passed resolutions expressing th view: (1; That the Auckland Cit; Jouncil by-law restricting the right of free speech and free assembly i unduly discriminatory in action; (2 ihat facilities provided for the exet cise of these rights should be equal! available to all citizens; (3) that th' .sentences passed on the men who pai ticipated in the Beresford Street pre test meeting on July 29 were unneces sarily severe and a revival of the cut few was humiliating and an imprope use of the probation system; and (4 that the Government should not pre reed with the proposed legislation eni bodying in Statute form certain Wa Regulations, on the ground that it vic 'lates the spirit and principles of Bn fish constitutional freedom. The speakers at the meting were Mr. F. T. B. Slipper and Professor M A. Sewell, who said that the fighr. fo freedom of speech threatened one again to become that central struggl of political .-H-.d > biT.
