Convoy Sloops
NAVAL REINFORCEMENT FILLING DANGEROUS GAP (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) Received Sept. 3, 9.25 p.m. LONDON, Sept. 3. t The Daily Telegraph’s naval corresrj pordent says that the Bittern, the i, Navy's first convoy sloop, will shortly 3 be launched at Clydebank. She is designed to fill & dangerous gap in the - Empire’s sea defences. Owing to - treaty restrictions, Britain is short of f of modern cruisers. The Bittern does - not exceed 2000 tons, but she carries d two 6-inch guns instead of the two 4.7 p in guns hitherto carried by smaller s sloops. Thus the Bittern should be 3 able to engage any submarine. 2 If the type is successful, 25 or 36 may be added to the Navy. They will be invaluable for reinforcement, and each costs less than a destroyer.
