DIGGERS” AT GOLF

WANGANUI TOURNEY PLANNED, MANY “REGIMENTS” WILL PARADE. “The game will tec off following thl rum issue and play will be in accord with routine orders issued from brigade headquarters and submitted to all ranks through their respective battalions. Zero hour, 1 p,m.” Such an intimation has been convoyed to the 70 odd entrants of the “Diggers’ ” golf tournament, which is to be played on the Belmont links oa Thursday afternoon. There will be a great deal more than just golf in this parade of ranks from regiments of all shapes, sizes and reputations. It would be safe to say that the links will sea all units in a fighting force represented, from the A.S.C.. or “cushv lob” out-

from the A.S.C., or “cushy job” outfit, to the “Pukka” front-line soldier. Not only that; the tournament will bring together representatives of regiments from all over the Dominion, and oven, from “Blighty” herself. There is a possibility, even yet, that a stray “Aussie” will find a place in. the parade. Looking down the list of entries, one sees the Auckland. Wellington. Canterbury and Otago Infantry Regiments represented. The Rifle Brigade, the Royal Field Artillery, the Royal ‘Air FoYce, the New Zealand Engineers, New Zealand Medical Corps, and various players representing th® mounted rifles regiments of the Dominion, have entered. There is a stray representative of the 13tb Middlesex Regiment of Old England. It will truly be a great day, when these golfers get together in teams made up according to the regiments to which they belong. In keeping with the occasion trophies have been secured which have a direct link with the days when, comradeship was the biggest thing in life. For instance, there is a dinner gong made out of a shell case. A tin hat is to be a challenge trophy, and will be adorned with names as the years roll on and the time-worn obser-vation-is made that “old soldier® never die: they simply fade away.’ 1 There will be gas masks for those inclined to be over ruddy when in th< bunkers. There is to be a “mug’s’’ trophy—no army outfit would bo complete without a “mug,” the sort of chap who invariably gets into difficultie* and spoils everybody else’* leave for a fortnight. What the trophy for that honoured player is to be not many people know, but it will bo appropriate ir. every way. The object behind the “Diggers’” golf tournament is to encourage the comradeship of old in a setting eminently suitable. Golfers from all over the Wanganui district, even as far away as Karioi. are coming to air their knowledge of a game which tests the vocabularies of the best, to talk of old times, and to pave the way for a IDominion-wide scheme on similar lines. Th* Brigadier, or Corps Commander, will present the prizes afterwards and a photographer will take a hand in recording a unique event so far as Wanganui is concerned. goods were carried by rail, there would be more work for the smaller carriers? —Yes, quite possibly. Mr O’Dca: Do you give your customers any better service than they could receive by railway?—We think so and they think so. Mr O’Dea: But do they think ®ot— Well, they patronise us instead of tn® railway. Mr Couch, representing the railways, asked witness if there was any reason why the company should not apply for a defined route licence between Wellington, Wanganui and Hawera, and Wanganui and Palmerston North. Witness replied that he had been advised to make the present application by the Commissioner of Transport. After hearing further evidence, th® Authority reserved its deci«ion. nf’TTT’ FHT nUKTH trO/-ITXI « "rvrt
