WOMEN’S INSTITUTES
UTIKU SOCIAL AND DANCE. A very successful social and dance was held in the Utiku Hall on Wednesday evening, August 29, by the Utiku AVomen’s Institute to celebrate their first birthday. There was a very large attendance of members, friends and visitors. The hall was beautifully decorated for the occasion with streamers in institute colours (blue and yellow), with greenery and yellow pansies. The music was supplied by R. Webb (piano) and C. Murray (saxophone). Extras were played by Air. E. Newland (accordion), F. Bueck (accordion) and Miss A. Prime (piano). Alesdames AV. Prime and E. C. Gibbs ably carried out the duties of Af’s.C. During the evening songs were rendered by Mr. H. Richards, Airs. Webb, Mrs. Luxford and Airs. Randolph. Airs. Smith greatly pleased the crowd with a recitation. Mrs. Hayes contributed a pianoforte solo and Misses P. Prime and Stone a pianoforte duet, which were woll received. A tap dance by Misses G. and S. Reid was much appreciated. Two humourous dialogues were played by institute members, entitled “Changing Grannie’s Room” and “Hypnotism,’’ which kept everyone in fits of laughter from start to finish. A very dainty supper was served by members of the institute, after which a beautiful birthday cake, made and presented by Airs. W. Primo, was cut by the president, Airs. iDellow, everyone present receiving a piece. Dancing was indulged in until an early hour of the morning, when a most enjoyable evening was brought to a close with the singing of the National Anthem and Auld Lang Syne.
