WEST COAST TITLE WON BY WANGANUI CLUB DIFFICULT CONDITIONS MET CENTRE TEAM SELECTED By a margin of nine points, the Wanganui Harrier Club defeated the New Plymouth Club for the championship title in the West Coast cross-courtrv race of miles, held at Marton on Saturday afternoon. Marton were placed third. Wanganui also won the rave for the B teams, defeating New Plymouth. C. Weller was the first man heme, followed bv C. Hill, of Marton, with J. Pike, of New Plymouth, third. Two-thirds of the course was very wet and soggy, with the result that times suffered. As a result of the race, the following team has been selected to represent the West. Coast Centre at Dunedin, where tne Dominion cross-country championship will be held on September 15: — C. Weller (Wanganui), A. Bourgeois (Wanganui), C. Hill (Marton), F. Hill (Marton), J. Pike (New Plymouth), M. Radford (New Plymouth). This team will defend the Dominion title for the West Coast, which v/on the event at Wanganui last year. Mr A. C. Bourgeois was appointed manager. Ploughed fields, and wet and soggy country made conditions difficult for the runners after they left Marton Park. Four miles of swampy country slowed upon the pave and offered the Wanganui runners something totally different from what they are accustomed at Wanganui. Weller, who ran home first, was unable to cut out the distance in under 40 minutes, but he had a comfortable lead from C. Hill, of Marton, who ran exceptionally well. J. Pike, of New Plymouth, was not far behind C. Hill, with F. Hill, Radford and Bourgeois arriving shortly afterwards. The Wanganui men then produced a solid wedge of runners, securing the teams title with a comfortable margin. Six men ran in each team, four counting for points. The Auckland provincial harrier championship was decided over 6| miles, the British Empire Games’ runner. J. W. Savidan, securing an easy victory, winning by 400 yards from A. M. Atton, of H.M.S. Diomede. Savidan ’s time was 33min 32sec. Neither Savidan nor Alton is available for the team to represent Auckland in the Dominion championship race at Dunedin on September 15, the team being as follows:—Nicholson.
