SUCCESSFUL MEETING

COMBINED HUNT CLUBS RAZOR’S TARANAKI CLP ORAPAI'S DUAL SUCCESS. (By 11 Kestrel’’) Success attended the combined hunt clubs’ meeting, which concluded at New Plymouth on Saturday, when the Taranaki Hunt Club’s programme was decided. The attendance was better than on the first day in spite of the threatening weather early, but the rain held ott and the meeting was concluded under excellent conditions. The totalisator was again well patronised and on the two machines £7192 10s was handled, compared with £6434 10s for the Taranaki Hunt Club meeting last year. The aggregate was £13.176 10s, whereas last year the combined totals made £9026 10s. The track was heavier than on the first day and cut up considerably. Form worked out fairly well under the circumstances, though Razor and Gold Mission sprang surprises on investors when they won the Hunt Cup and the Hack Scurry respectively. Orapai notched his second victory of the meet ing by winning the Stratford Handicap. Leo Colossus made a little improvement to win the Urenui Hack Handicap, and Hukemanu atoned for a costly lapse on the opening day by winning the Hunters’ Flat. Ruanui showed a return to his best form by winning the Hack and Hunters’ Hurdles, and Tahurangi scored nicely in the hack distance event to return a dividend not far short of double figures. , No serious accident marred the day s racing, though C. Thomson suffered slight concussion when War Eagle came to grief at the final obstacle in the Hack and Hunters’ Hurdles and Ruaform fell over him. Neither of the riders was injured when Shamen and Hard Gold came down in the Hunt Cup. Ruanui’s Hurdles Win. Silent Bill was an each-way favourite for the Hack and Hunters’ Hurdles but was beaten into second place by RuaBeau Star had a lead of half a dozen lengths past the stands, with WaiEagle, Lebanon, Silent Bill and Harvest Moon following and Ruanui well back. Down the back Beau Star, Harvest Moon and War Eagle were racing in close order, with Silent Bill. Count Lendroff and Ruanui following. On the home turn Silent Bill had gone to the front and was joined by Ruanui as thev straightened up, Beau Star ami Count Lendroff being nearest of the others. Once over the last obstacle RuUnui held on to beat Silent Bill by half a length, with Count Lendroff ten lengths awav and Harvest Moon next. War Eagle fell at the last fence and Ruaform came to grief oyer him, but neither of the horses was injured. Gold Mission’s Good Price. Eara was a good favourite on the straight-out machine, but Colossal carried a little more on the place totalisator, with Gold Mission at a doublefigure quote. Gold Mission, Rose Ray. Eara amt Bay Sand showed out when the tapes went up, but by the time they had aone a couple of furlongs Colossal had made up a good deal of leeway and followed Gold Mission across the top, with ' Bay Sand. Rose Ray. Sandlark and Eara bunched behind them. Gold Mission and Colossal had a good tussle up the straight, the former prevailing by a neck, with Bay Sand a length and a half awav. Rose Ray, Eara and Sandlark were in a line, and then came General Quex and Chikara. Tahurangi Scores Nicely. Spearform was the favourite tor the Waihi Hack Handicap, with Taitoru ] well backed and Tahurangi, third in request, at a good price. After St. Clara, Silk Sox and Taitoru had been in the van running out of the straight, Tahurangi wrested the lead off Silk Sox at the seven furlongs, and Spearform, St. Clara, Taitoru, Benedictine and Ythan followed them down the back, with Taitoru well back. Silk Sox and Tahurangi showed the way on the home turn, with Spearform and Taitoru next, and in an interesting finish Tahurangi came on to win by a length and a-half from Spearform, who was a neck in front of Silk Sox. Taitoru was a fair fourth, and St. Clara, Benedictine and Ythan next to finish. Razor Finishes Well. Currajong was the straight-out favourite for the Taranaki Hunt Cup, with Hard Gold favoured on the place machine. but the winner turned up in the neglected Razor at a double-figure price. Over the early stages Don Erma. Sleepy and Ngarota made play and this trio led Razor, Hard Gold. Lueess, Currajong and Glemcourier over the brush double in front of the stands the first time. Shamen fell after going six furlongs, and Hard Gold lost his rider at the High School bend obstacle. The second time past the stands Don Erma was piloting Razor, Lueess, Ngareta, Sleepy and Currajong, the favourite still being well back. Razor wrested the lead off Don Erma running into the back stretch, but Lueess kept near the, leaders and challenged Razor as they ran for the final obstacle. In the run home Razor was doing it nicely to win by two and a-half lengths from Lueess. who was eight lengths in front of Don Erma. Then came ’Sleepy and Ngareta. with Currajong well back. Orapai Scores Again. Orapai and Carfex were evenly backed for the Stratford Handicap, and the pair returned the dividends. Korokio and Carfex showed out at barrier rise, but Korokio was joined by Green Linnet at the half-mile, and the order of the others was Aga Khan, Prolyxo, Carfex. Davistoek and Orapai. The favourite was working his way through as they crossed the top, and J<iiowe<i "Korokio, Aga Khan and Carfex into the straight. A splendid finish resulted in Orapai getting the verdict after responding to a challenge from Carfex, his winning margin being a neck. Korokio was a length away, third, and Aga Khan and Prolyxo followed. Hukemanu Makes Amends. Hukemanu, the disqualified winner of the Ladies’ Bracelet the first 'lay, made amends by winning the Hunters’

Handicap, for which he was a firm favourite. Out of the straight The Ark, Burnwood, March Alone, Kaola, Poterie and Cynical Kid were running in that order, but Cynical Kid was soon taken up to the leaders and piloted The Ark, Burn wood, Chinatown, March Alone. Hukemanu and Santoft along the back, Santoft made a run crossing the top and was with Cynical Kid and Burnwood on the home turn, with Hukemanu putting in an appearance. The issue was not in doubt over the final stages, though Cynical Kid hung on well to run the favourite to half a length. Three lengths back came Santoft, with March Alone fourth and Burn wood next. Last to Leo Colossus. Superior was preferred to Leo Colossus in the concluding event, but had to be content with second place when Leo Colossus challenged. The favourite got the best of the start and was followed down the back by Prince Reno, Leo Colossus and Adept, but Leo Colossus ran up behind her across the top, when Prince Reno, Lady Zinnia and Gowanlea were next. When they straightened up for the run home Leo Colossus challenged and won in an interesting finish by half a length, with Prince Reno a similar distance back, third. Adept, right up with Prince Reno, was fourth. DETAILS OF RESULTS. HACK AND HUNTERS’ HURDLES (Of £6O; miles.) 3/3 —Ruanui (Mr. D. A. Pres? on) b g, aged, by Limond—Rose Queen, 9.11, J.
