LONDON, Aug. 17. Mr. Ward Price, writing in the Daily Mail, says that the frantic cheering of a million people massed in the centre of Hamburg heralded a speech which was heard in Europe and America by the largest audience of any political pronouncement. A woman Ministerial secretary was denounced because she said “Good morning” instead of “Heil, Hitler,” which the Government has decreed as the sole form of greeting. GERMAN VOTERS DRUMMOND TO POLL. LOW FLYING AEROPLANES. Received Aug. 19, 6.25 p.m. BERLIN, Aug. 19. Hundreds of low-flying aeroplanes carrying swastika flags will drum voters to the poll all day to-morrow. The average forecast of the voting is 80 to 90 per cent, in favour of Hitler. Colonel von Hindenburg, broadcasting, said: “I am acting as my father would have wished, when 1 call on the people to invest Hitler as Reich President. ” “GERMAN FRONT” PETITION TO THE LEAGUE. A petition addressed to the League of Nations by the “German Front” in the Saar violently attacks the president of the Commission, accusing him of lack of neutrality and giving favourable treatment to those in the Saar fighting against the German Government, NAZI PURGE OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT. DETAILS OF THE ARRESTS. Received Aug. 19, 6.20 p.m. BERLIN, Aug. 18. General Goering, in the first official announcement of details of the arrests in connection with the Roehm affair, states that 1124 were taken into “protective custody” throughout Germany. To date 1079 have been granted an amnesty and officials are investigating grave evidence regarding the remainder. RULER OVER GERMANY CORPORAL SUCCEEDS MARSHAL LONDON, Aug. 17. For the first time in history a foreigner is the head of Germany, and that foreigner is an Austrian. An excorporal succeeds a field-marshal as commander-in-chief of the army and navy. As the Daily Mail puts it, “The situation is, ‘Hitler über alles. ’ ” Perhaps the most significant of all Continental comments is in Le Temps (Paris), which says: “There is no more German Republic, no more Constitution —only Reichsfuehrer Hitler, armed with powers the Hohenzollerns never knew, and sole master of the German people. “Hitler’s self-appointment to the Presidency can be regarded as compatible with the latest Nazi code of manners, which ignores the most elementary constitutional appearances, and as symbolic of the complete lawlessness of the Government’s future policy. Will the surviving non-Nazi forces be content to bow before this unprecedented act? The real experiment of the new Germany begins now.” ___
