STIR AT A MEETING

MOUNT EDEN COUNCIL. MAYOR’S WELLINGTON VISIT. A flying visit to Wellington made by rhe Mayor of Mount Eden (Mr. T. McNab) early last week, to give evidence in connection with the Auckland Metropolitan Milk Act Repeal Bill, was the subject of heated discussion at Monday night’s meeting of the Borough Council, when a question was raised regarding an item of £8 Is lOd, appearing in the accounts for “travelling expenses to Wellington,’’ incurred by Mr. McNab, states the New Zealand Herald. “I think your attitude is very small,” remarked Mr. McNab, when an allegation was made that he left for Wellington without consulting the council, and should account for the expenditure. “I have never been asso-

dated with such small men,” repeated Mr. McNab. “I went to Wellington to represent people in a very important matter. I will pay the money myself.’’ He was of the opinion that the Deputy Mayor (Mr S. E. Chappell) knew of his visit. Mr. Chappell: 1 deny that. I knew nothing about it! Mr. McNab disagreed. “I have been accused by the Mayor on a previous occasion of not telling the truth,’’ objected Mr. Chappell. “I demand him to retract or prove it. He must take it back.” Mr. McNab: I will not. Mr. Chappell: Very well, I will know what to do. “I am sorry the matter has arisen,’’ said Mr. F. S Battley. “There has been misapprehension on both sides. 1 am not a man of war, but a man of

peace.” He considered, however, that it would have been preferable if the Mayor had telephoned members of the council before leaving for Wellington. “I went on behalf of the people of Mount Eden,” said Mr. McNab. Mr. J. A. Steele: We represent the people and we should have been consulted. “It is not a good thing for the council that the Mayor and the Deputy Mayor should be at loggerheads,” said Mr. C. H. Cowan. “We are confident in the ability of our chairman, who has the interests of the borough at heart, and it is time the hatchet was buried.” Mr. McNab then withdrew his remark and council business proceeded. A report on his visit to Wellington was later presented by Mr. McNab. I
