POPULAR TEACHER FAREWELLED * A pleasant function that had a tinge of sadness was held on Friday afternoon at the Western Rangitikei School, when the children and parents gathered to say farewell to Mrs Jewell, who is leaving to rejoin her husband in Hamilton. The proceedings opened with excellently rendered items by the ehildwr. Mr E. 13. Gordon, in making the presentation, spoke of the happy relationship that had existed between Mrs Jewell and the parents during her two L years in charge of the school and eulogised her for the progress the children had made in her care. He wished her '■ every success and happiness for the future. j Mr A. W. Shield also spoke of the ii relationship between Mrs Jewell and the committee, and her efficiency as an s organiser. Her interest in the school and in any function connected with it • s was such that the committee’s task v had been a very easy one. Jean Coleman then presented Mrs e Jewell ’with a silver cake stand and j knife, suitably engraved. a Mrs Jewell, in a charming little n speech, acknowledged her thanks and expressed her regret at leaving. n Afternoon tea brought the proceed(j ings to a close. n OBITUARY. MRS. J. BENDING. I It is with deepest sympathy and regret that wo have to record the passing of one of Marton’s oldest residents, Mrs. J. Bending, who passed away quietly last week. Mrs. Bending was 1 ‘ beloved by all who had the privilege of ’ knowing her, and she will be sadly , missed by the community. Always hav- ? ing a cheery word, and always being a great helper in social work, she gave her help willingly and supported many organisations. \ Mrs. Bending settled in Marton in the , year 1908, and has spent most of her life in the town. She was a member . of the Marton Junction branch of the I Women’s Institute, the St. Stephen's . Guild, and was a member of the Scout Committee. Mrs. Bending was also , a keen supporter of the Junction School, and the flag was flown at half-mast on the school last Monday and Tuesday. On Tuesday the pupils of the Junction School lined up and stood at attention as the funeral cortege passed the school. Many beauttiful floral tributes surrounded the casket, and a large gathering was present as a last respect. RANGITIKEI RUGBY. JUNIOR REP. TEAM SELECTED.
