JUNIOR RUGBY

TAIHAPE DEFEATS RANGITIKEI REPRESENTATIVE TEAMS MEET AT MANGAWEKA Saturday’s matcli at Mangaweka, when Taihape defeated Kangiukci. by 14 points tu 5, was an .interesting enough display of junior Rugby. Witn practically few movements worthy of special mention in the first spell, the contest develox>ed during the second half into a keen, hard-iought buttle with plenty of action. Ou the whole it was a bright, clean contest, but was marred by too many infringements and from the spectators’ point of view the game would have been better if it had been more open. Rangitikei juniors require more training before they can expect to be a really strong combination. Taihape was the superior team and deserved its victory. Tnougli in many respects their play left, room for improvement, they had the better finish to their movements and demonstrated their superiority over thenopponents by making their attacks more telling and by handling the ball to better advantage. There were no scores in the first half and the play was more or less even, each team crying to penetrate the other’s defence in some strong, concentrated forward movements that were punctuated at odd moments by glimpses of promising play. ’The second half was considerably faster than the first. Taihape began forcing the play; Rangitikei defending their lines reciprocated with some good work, which was only frustrated by quick movement on the part of Taihape. In making up their points, the boys from the Main Trunk succeeded in crossing the line four times, three unconverted tries and one converted. Rangitikei’s five points came from a converted try. In dealing with every aspect of the game, the uneven nature of the Mangaweka ground must be taken into consideration. It is beautifully sheltered; but rather rugged for spectacular play. In the Rangitikei team Larsen, made a good full-back, while Liddicoat, Tolley and Peacock were prominent for good play. Taihapo’S best men were Johansen, Chase, Nicholson, Chase and Gregory. For that matter, however, all the players on the field put their best efforts into making this fixture a good, keen game. The Teams Rangitikei (green): Larsen (M.); MCox (M.), K. Follas (Hv.)» K.
