Last Saturday should have seen the completion of the second round of the Cup competition, but only one of the two games scheduled was played. Owing to the condition of No. 2 ground on Victoria Park the referee. Air. Langslow, declared it unplayable. The whole of one goal was under water. Under the circumstances the referee could have done nothing else. As it was. the adjoining ground was in fair condition, considering the amount of rain experienced on Friday and Saturday. The surface, however, was grease. ♦ V * » ' The A Ihletic-Aramoho game was somewhat spoiled by the strong wind which was blowing, and of which neither side took advantage. The result was that there was very poor finishing. Athletic had the better of the play and the result, two goals to one in their favour, just about reflects the run of play. For the winners Barron, in goal, did all that was asked of him. Fairclough’s shot rather took him by surprise. Thomson and Wade were a strong pair of defenders. Crumbley was again the best man in the middle line, being strong in the defence in the first spell and then strong in attack when they bad the wind advantage, finishing up a good day’s work by scoring the deciding goal. Robinson was next in order. Lear has not regained bis form vet. Boyack and Bell did most of the" attacking for Athletic, the former feeding his outside mate to perfection. Bell’s crossing was a feature of the game. I], Wilson was the best of the other three. * ♦ • • For Aramoho Chesnut in goal was on the top of his form. lie macle one mistake when he appealed for off-side instead of going for the ball when Athletic scored the winning goal. Davidson and Duke were equally as good as tho Athletic backs. While Duke plays a good game at back, it is doubtful whether it is good policy on the part of Aramoho to weaken an already weak forward line to strengthen a back line which was as good as any. Two years ago Duke was one of the best outside players in Wanganui. He has still the ability, and with Bates he has the proper support. Rusli ng was the pick of the halves. Cave was not up to his usual form. Bates was the star forward, especially in the second spell, when he was in a class by himself. Kerwin, too, showed good footwork, but he attempts too much before parting. Young Fairclough gave a good performance when it is considered that this boy plays left back in his junior team. It was rather unfortunate that Wade ' met with an accident in the last minutes of he game. He has gone home to Auckland as a convalescent. The accident to this player draws attention to tho advisabality of having some kind of insurance for players. It should be possible to get some scheme for the Dominion. # ♦ ♦ • Saturday next should have been Junior Association benefit” day, but owing to arrangements not being completed this has been put off till July 11. There will thus be only one game on Saturday, this being the postponed llastbrookc-Thistle game in the Cup competition. L’astbrooke have been rather unfortunate. Ju their meetings with Thistle this season, having been defeated by a good margin on each occasion. However. they are playing better than at any time earlier in the season and may be expected to extend Thistle to the utmost. » In the junior matches next {Saturday Alarist, having got on the winning side, intend to maintain the position, and their meeting with Thistle should prove most interesting. Their last meeting resulted in a draw. Technical College will meet the Rangers, but they will have to put more penetration into their forward play and shoot more frequently. These junior games will be played on Williams Park. • • * * Four lower grade matches will be played on Victoria Park next Saturday, Technical B playing Rangers an] Technical A meeting Aramoho in. the font th grade, and Technical meeting Rangers i and United playing Intermediate m tho i fifth grade. I At the meeting of the management committee of the Wanganui Foo:ball Association on Monday night a letter was received from the Auckland Association asking for challenges for the Fly ger Rose Bowl. JI was considofed that the time was not opportune to send in a challenge. A committee consisting of Messrs. ■ W. G. Herd and G. Langslow and the secretary was appointed to make enquiries regarding the Chatham Cup linal game and report back to the management committee. A proposal to approach Masterton in connection with a match was made at last Monday’s meeting. After discussion the secretary was instructed to write for information. At a meeting of the junior management committee on .Monday night the transfer of J. Byies to Marist was granted. It was decided to arrange for local games on July .11. J. McCalla m was stated to be free to play for Thistle. The Scottish Football Association has decided to invite Italy to send a Soccer football team to oppose Scotland next season. Gate receipts from the recent match between Scotland and Austria in Glasgow were £4883, of which Austria received £lB3l.
