40 HOUR WEEK
TO ABSORB UNEMPLOYED PROPOSAL IN CHRISTCHURCH. [ Pe* - Fresw Association. } CHRISTCHURCH, July 2. The City Council to-night discussed a motion by Mr. A. E. Armstrong, Independent Labour councillor, to reduce the hours of employees to 40 per week, with the object of absorbing more men at present unemployed. It was agreed, after a diesussion, that the matter be referred to a committee for report. Councillors were in general agreement that a shorter working week was coming, but probably not in the life of the present council. It was stated that the cost would be about £lO,OOO a year.
