DISCOVERING TALENT

CLUBS FOR UNEMPLOYED. | Social centres and clubs for tho unemployed have done some of their most useful work in Lancashire in discovering new ways in which hidden talent can be used. One man in an East Lancashire centre, says a writer in England, who had been a weaver of extremely fine cloth, was given some old gramophone records, and it was suggested that he should melt them down and make something out of the wax. He modelled with his hands two vases o: ac shape, and while rhe wax was pin. tic worked in all-over pattern. He at once felt that he was in the genuine line of potters, and the two vases look extremely well. Photography, too, has awakened a good deal of appreciate of beauty. One man was given a well-taken photograph of a woman sitting at the doorway of an old cottage with plenty 'o'* flowers and trees, and asked to colour it. He had not handled colours in such a way before, but after two attempts produced a good and well-modu-lated picture. Another was encouraged to try his hand at enlarging in a dark room. The picture was of a spray of blackberries, but it enlarged well. Tho making of small chairs for children. out of old pieces of w r ood for the frames and cane fibre for the seats, has been an attractive occupation. Upholstery has been a more ambitious scheme for some men. Ono of the most popular sidelines is lamp shades. They give an opportunity to invent your own shape and stylo and colour, and there is an art in sewing the crackling parchment. One man did three pen sketches of a country scene. Each attempt was better than tho last. OATMEAL FOR BEAUTY FINE SKIN CLEANSER. The use of oatmeal as a skin beautifier is considered definitely beneficial by expert beauty culturists, as is indicated by the "frequency with which they recommend modernised oatmeal packs and such like. If a simple dusting powder is required you should procure the finest oatmeal powder, which is perfumed and sold in tins. For a skin cleanser to be used with tepid water prepare your supply as follows:—Refined oatmeal powder, 8oz; powdered castile sogip, 4oz: violet perfume, one teaspoonful; oil of almonds, three drops. Alix well together, and sift through coarse muslin. For use, enclose one or two tablespoonsful in a small muslin bag and' squeeze in a basin of warm water until the water has a milky appearance. This is an excellent skin cleanser for all occasions. And during the winter months, for those whose hands are apt to become rough or chap if not thoroughly dried, it is wise to have a container of oatmeal in tho bathroom, into which the hands might be plunged after drying, CARD EVENING A most enjoyable card evening was held on Saturday evening at the home of Air. and Airs.
