BENSON TROPHY CONTEST RESULTS AT MASTERTON WANGANUI QUARTET DOESWELL 'lhe first race of the season for the Benson Trophy was run at Masterton on Saturday, when the Wanganui Harrier Club’s contingent engaged in the first of the two races which decide the holder of the trophy for the season. On a wet course tho Masterton Club emerged victors by a margin of 23 points, while they also provided the individual winner in E. Talbot. Although the Masterton Club was thus placed in the lead for the trophy, the Wanganui team provided a good buildup for the team of twelve by gaining the next four positions with Weller, Bourgeois, K. Johnston and G. Johnston. After these members, the Wanganui team was somewhat spread out, the Wairarapa team ’ combining very well in threes and fours. The course covered was mainly of a flat nature, with many fences and swampy patches, and roadwork scattered throughout the course. Two creeks were also hazards to compete with. The Race Described Th e Masterton team of twelve finished in the fiist 20 in the race, and the Wanganu; in the first 30. A mile and a-half from, the commencement Weller and Johnston (AV.), were leading from Talbot (M.), who was followed by G. Johnston and Bourgeois (W.). Behind these two followed McKay and Quayle (M.), the rest of the field being well bunched. These positions were somewhat altered at the finish, as the following list denotes:— C.
