LIFE OF PARLIAMENT
GOVERNMENT’S EXTENSION LABOUR MEMBERS RENEW ATTACK ON DECISION COALITION AND THE ELECTORS’ BLANK CHEQUE Luijour members opened their attack on the Government at the first opportunity when Parliament met yesterday, Mr. P. Fraser leading the onslaught and raising the question of the extension of Parliament’s life. He said that the Government had trampled underfoot the fundamental spirit of the Constitution and had flouted democracy. Support for the protest against the prolongation of the term also came from the member for Wellington Suburbs, Mr. R. A. Wright, who also said that in the past, when a party went to the country, it had a discussed and arranged programme, but at the last election the Government had had no plan beyond a vague idea of putting the country right. The Prime Minister (Hon. G. W. Forbes), in reply, said that the electors had been told that the crisis required drastic measures, and the life of Parliament had been extended to enable the effect of the legislation introduced by the Government to be seen.
