IRISH LANGUAGE
USAGE DWINDLING. MINISTER’S OBSERVATIONS. DUBLIN, June 12. The Minister of Education, Mr. T. Derrig, in the Dail to-day, stated that the Irish language was dying out in spite of the efforts of schools elsewhere to promote its use. Thirty years ago, said the Minister, pro-Irish propaganda had failed. The old people did not like Irish and would not interest the young folk in it, when tho economic value of English was so evident. Mr. Derrig outlined a scheme under which a small annual bonus would be paid to parents to induce them to speak Irish to their children, examinations to be held before the money was paid.
