An Important Discovery.

For years the actual cause was hidden. but at length, through the researches of a doctor who lived and worked among miners for many years, part of the truth was found out. although there is still something to be studied in the disease. The most important result of the doctor’s inquiries was the discovery that the better the light with which the miner works the less likely is he to suffer from nystagmus. There arc different kinds of miners’ lamps, some giving a brilliant illumination and some giving a comparatively poor light. In the case of a miner working with a poor light a great strain is thrown on the eyes, and when this is continued for a long time, this, distressing and uncontrollable jerking of the eyes sets in. When once nystagmus has started it is difficult to cure. Our aim should be to prevent it by using as brilliant a light as can be obtained. Tooting Hall, Tooting, where LDefoc is said to have lived when he was writing “Robinson Crusoe,” has been sold and will probably be demolished. Tooting has roads named Robinson, Crusoe, Friday, Defoe, and even Island. In one French village, Chalcttc-en-Gatinais, there aro foreign residents belonging to 21 nations, including Germany, Belgium, America, Austria. Spain, Finland, Hungary. Greece, Russia, Switzerland and Turkey. One of the rarest hobbies in the world is that of making pictures from human hair. The only person believed to be following this peculiar avocation to-day is a barber in Scotland, who' makes astonishingly realistic scenes with hair cut from heads of cus-' tomers.
