REGENT THEATRE

“MYSTERY OF MR X” Th© good old-fashioned thriller makes a most impressive return in “The Mystery of Mr. X,” which commences its Wanganui season at the Regent Theatre to-day. The ever-popular Robert Montgomery appears as a debonair gentleman crook who happens to be “working” London. At the same time a homicidal maniac is carrying on a series of dastardly murders on policemen. Suspicion falls on the jewel thief, and the film deals largely with the brilliant battle of wits between the sophisticated and genial Montgomery and an astute police chief, whose part is splendidly played by Lewis Stone. Flaying opposite to Montgomery is Elizabeth Allan, a charming young English actress, whose natural performance as the daughter of the police commissioner is superb. The film, which was produced in the United States, is lull of first-class American wit and subtleties, as well as being packed with action and breathless suspense. A thoroughly delightful programme is rounded off with a group of supports, which include a Hearst Mctrotone News, an Australian Cincsouna Review, in which are shown some views of a blind Sydney man giving a remarkable demonstration of his ability at golf. Also on the programme are an entertaining Pathe Pictorial, a most original technicolour comedy entitled “Roast Beef and Movies/’ containing clever skits on Mae West, Jack Oakie, Laurel and Hardy and other Hollywood stars. The supports are of a very high standard. A musi’eal revue in technicolour, a cartoon, “Roast Beef and the Movies,” ”Spiteflight,” and a Metrotone newsreel are the principal items on a supporting programme of high merit. This morning a special monster matinee for children will be held, with Tom Mix in “The Texas Bad Man, ” and suitable supports.
