AUCKLAND CANDIDATES

DANNEVIRKE AND TRENTHAM. NOTES AND COMMENTS. (Special to ‘•'Chronicle.”) AUCKLAND, June 28. The steeplechasing discovery of the ■winter, Tudor, is engaged in two crosscountry events at Trentham and on his Auckland showings he uugnt to w m which ever event is set for aim. He seems to be better placed in tiie minor contest, in which he has 12.9; ne won the last day at Ellerslie with a couple of pounds less and was never galloping. Very fine fields have been entered for the Dannevirke Hunt Club’s fixturenext Wednesday at Dannevirke, and with the prospect of excellent acceptances the meeting should be a sucee&s. The class is particularly good in all events not confined to hunters, and even this latter representation is much better than anticipated A feature of the gathering will be the appearance of Consent in the hunters’ events. One of the very interesting races at Dannevirke is the open flat event, the Kaitoke Handicap, seven furlongs, for good performers like Slippery, Royal Bengal, AtholspeaV. La toupee, Princess Doreen, Lack, Beryl Latour and others of this type are not often got together at a mere hunt meeting. Most of them will go to the post, ror doubtless several owners will appreciate the chance of giving their horses another race before taking on the cracks at Wellington. Likewise there is another very fine field in the Oringi Hurdles at Dannevirke, for the seven in the top division have been more than useful performers over the battens. They include Esteem, who- was this month taken to Te Awamutu to pick up the hurdle race theie, but the course beat him, as many thought it would. The more roomy Dannevirke track wii l assist him and if he produces h’s best and does not cover too much ground he should do a good turn for his popular owner. Likely Maidens. A big field of maidens is engaged in the Novice event at Dannevirke. | There is one from Auckland included m i this big batch, this being {Square Acre, and probably the idea is to do meeting on the way to contest similar ■ classes at Trentham. Square Acre raced at Te Awamutu this month and showed a bit of pace in the middle stages, but not suilicient to get an i actual line on his prospects, out the fact that he has been entered for the Wellington fixture indicates mat his j owner has no doubts as to ms possibHi- 1 ties. Another interesting Novice entry ; is Dareeourt, whose finishing run the j first day at Napier Park was suggestive of early improvement. Auckland horses have enjoyed an exceptionally good run in the Wellington steeplechase, winning five of me iast seven contests. Northerners entered for Tuesday week’s big event at ’ Trentham are Billy Boy, \ aipeen, i’atutahi, Simeon, Neil and Wiltshire —six of them out c-f sixteen nominated altogether. With this team it is quite likely that the winning share of the stake will once again go north. Tudor is Awapuni trained but was bred and ■ is owned at Cambridge. A Valuable Guide. it is probable that the best guide to ; solving the Wellington Steeplechase t problem will be the fu-rm shown at j Auckland, for of the sixteen engaged in this event no less than a dozen have ■ raced in the Auckland province, win- < tiers there during the past five weeks ! being Valpeen. Tudor. Paturahi and: Wiltshire. Riotous did not appear atj Ellerslie, but he contested the steeple' chase on the second day c-t the 1e I Kuiti meeting, Valpeen bcairng him, ; the latter then going on to capture the Great Northern »Ste piechase and acting I as runner-up to Patautahi in the Win- I ter Steeplechase. Auckland jumpers have had a fair ■ measure of success in the Winter Hur- j dies at Trentham, Paddon having cap- , tured the last two contests in this | event, but nevertheless the record «»f northern performers is by no means so j good in this race as it is In the Mel- ; hngton Steeplechase. Northern owneis | seem determined to give it a good go on this occasion, tor there are eight Auckland horses entered, these including the Great Northern Hurdles winner Wee Pat, and the runner-up, Makeup. Tudor at 10.7 particularly impresses in this event, and if he were set for it he may be the horse to mix it successful!}. He won a hack hurdle race on the middle day at Ellerslie and was never out of a canter, carrying 11.7 at that. If Grand Sport has improved anything on the form he displayed at Ellerslie this month he must stand an excellent chance in his Wellington en- ; aagements. His dashing effort the final day of the Great Northern meeting was impressive and it looked as if he would have won the open sprint but for losing Ins position midway through the contest. Even then he was only beaten a head by Greek Gold, lhe ’ grey gelding appears in both the hack and open sprints on the first day at Trantham.
