AUSTRALIAN ABORIGINES. THE GOVERNAIENT’S POLICY. CANBERRA, June 27. The lit. Hon. J. A. Lyons announced that the Federal Cabinet has decided to commute to imprisonment for life the sentences of death passed on eight aboiigines. Ti c modification of the death sentences is in accordance with the long-standing policy of Fcdeial Government not to inflict capital punishment upon aborigines for crimes committed outside the sphere of civilisation in North Australia. A message from Perth on Alay 31 read: Eight natives, charged with the murder of two white prospectors named Arinski and Hoch on the Fitzniaurice River in November 1932, were found guilty in the Darwin mipremo Court and svrte. ccd to death.
