BRITAIN TO REARM
DECISIONS REPORTED SCHEMES BEING PREPARED NAVY AND AIR FORCE (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) Received June 27, 11.5 p.m. LONDON, June 27. The Morning Post understands that Cabinet has definitely decided on a policy of rearmament, ana an important announcement can De expected shortly. The Air Ministry is preparing a scheme, and there is evidence of a similar scheme for strengthening the Navy already m existence. The Government, it is believed, told America that it will insist at the Nava] conference on a minimum of 70 cruisers, first demanded at Geneva in 1927, but well-informed circles are of opinion that the conference will not be held in. 1935, owing to the grave differences between the nations.
AERIAL DEFENCE AUSTRALIAN PURCHASES. Received June- 27, 11.5 p.m. MELBOURNE, June 27. Modern seaplane catapults have been purchased by the Commonwealth Government in Britain, and will be fitted to Australian cruisers and will be used for projecting the new Seagull Amphibian machines, 24 of which are now completing tests in England. Efforts are also being made to obtain delivery of at least six new’ Hawker Demon aircraft in time for the arrival oaf the Duke of Gloucester. Eighteen of these machines have been acquired at a cost of £106.000.
