W.C.T.U.

The Wanganui East W.C.T.U. held its monthly meeting on Thursday, when Mrs. Day presided over a good attendance of members and also conducted rhe devotional exercises, her subject being “The Influence of Women.” Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames Redpath, Horsley, Ashmore, Duxfield, and Andrew. After the minutes had been read and confirmed correspondence re “Social Educational Wireless’’ was read and discussed. It was decided to hold over further discussion till the next meeting. The secretary reported having written to Miss Stewart and Miss Twemlow re Miss Andrew’s visit. Mrs. Irwin, District White Ribbon Superintendent, addressed the meeting on White Ribbon affairs, urging nonworkers to become workers in the aim to increase the circulation of the paper. A dialogue was read by Mrs. Irwin and Miss Wallace, and Madame Edmondson contributed a solo- Bnth items were much appreciated. Votes of thanks were accorded the three ladies. At the next meeting. Pastor Fred Purnell will be the speaker. The meeting closed with the Benediction, after which afternoon tea was served.

WOMEN’S INSTITUTES MAKIKIKIRI. The June meeting of the Makirikiri Women’s Institute was held in the hall on Thursday, June 14, Mrs. Farley being in the chair, and the attendance was good. Mrs. Farley asked for volunteers to help sew the peggy squares together at her home on June 21, and six members offered their help. It was decided to hold the birthday party in August, and several members were added to the committee to help in arranging the function. Mrs. Horrocks spoke on the arrangements in hand in regard to a dance for Plunket funds, and it was agreed that the third Thursday in July would be a suitable date. AH are asked to bear this date in mind, and to help the worthy cause to the best of their ability. A letter was read from I he Wanganui Horticultural Society, and all members

were pleased with the praise meted out io the institute “bays.” Mrs. Farley gave a most full and interesting demonstration on the covering of lamp shades, and it was followed with interest by those present. The points competition was for machine or hand-made gloves, Mrs. Priest being the winner and Miss Hughes second, Twq competitions helped to make the afternoon enjoyable. The first was won bv Mrs. Bartrum, with. Miss Hughes second. The second competition was the identification of members’ hats. So proved so observant that they could place nearly all of them, while others failed to know any but their own. At afternoon tea time duplicate number slips were handed round, and each member was asked to find her partner and talk to her. Judging by the happy chatter the scheme was a great success. A vote of thanks to Mrs- Farley for her interesting demonstration and the singing of the National Anthem brought a very enjoyable afternoon to a close.
