GOOD-BYE TO BEMERSYDE

LADY HAIG TO LEAVE Tide, tide, whatever betide, There’ll aye be Haigs o’ Bernersyde. Countess Haig announced in Edinburgh recently that she is leaving Scotland to take up residence in Hampton Court Palace. The countess explained that the diminished state of the family finances, due to the upkeep of Bemersyde, which Earl Haig took over in a bad state of repair, necessitated the removal. Speaking of her future homo at Hampton Court, Lady Haig said that in this connection the King had been very kind to her. She also mentioned that Earl Haig’s rooms at Bemersyde would be opened in the near future as a museum and would contain the famous field-marshal’s war relies, uniforms and gifts from admirers all over the world. The young earl, who is now 16, is to enter Sandhurst shortly, with a view to joining his father’s old regiment, the 17th Lancers. Earl Haig died in 1928 and is buried at Dryburgh Alley, close to Berner-' sydo.
