FARMERS’ UNION

THE TURAKINA BRANCH The annual general meeting of the Turakina branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union was held in the Town Hall on Friday, April 27. The president, Mr J. A. Harris, presented his report to a good attendance of members. There were two matters which he specially stressed, namely the necessity for organisation of the farmers to meet present-day conditions and secondly the keen interest that mem bers were taking in the activities of the branch, as shown by th* large number that took the opportunity of attending the lectures arranged by the committee. He also referred to the valualde co-operation by the local branch of the W.D.F.U., whose members he wished to thank for providing supper after meetings as well as assisting with the conduct of a combined social evening. The report was adopted. The election of officers resulted: President, Mr J. A. Harris; comn'./t--tee, Messrs H. Y. Lethbridge, IL J. Cameron, J. Cater, A. C. Major, C. A. Major, J. I. Morgan, A. McPherson, L. Cameron; hon. secretary and treasurer D. A. Cameron. The following remits were passed:— (1) That an endeavour be made to obtain the services of a veterinary surgeon for farmers in the Marton and adjoining districts. (2) That the P. and T. Department be urged to give immediate effect to the reduction in toll fees, which it has already considered, between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m., in order to relieve the present congestion between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m., and that between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. be included in the same schedule. Mr Harris introduced Mr Lloyd Hammond, and requested him to give an address upon the work of the Dominion Executive. After a very interesting review of the action taken by the executive in connection with the present day major problems affecting the farmer, Mr Hammond was asked a number of questions, to which satisfactory information was given. A hearty vote of thanks to tho speaker was carried by acclamation. At the conclusion of the meeting, members of the local branch of the 'W.D.F.U. kindly provided supper.
