STORMY WEATHER

DELAYS TO SHIPPING FEW VESSELS LEAVE PORT. * Per Press Association. ) WELLINGTON, May 9. Heavy southerly weather yesterday and to-day has been responsible for widespread delays to shipping, particularly on the East Coast of both islands. Rain at many ports has hampered cargo-handling operations, while heavy seas in Cook Strait and down the East Coast have prevented many coastal vessels from leaving port, and have forced others to run for shelter. Yesterday the only two vessels to leave Wellington were the Arahura and Wahine, while to-day the ferry steamers Tamahir.e, Matangi and Rangatira were the only ships to leave pert, although the Holmdale for Picton and Kaitoa for Motueka are up to sail early to-morrow morning. The Marangi was nearly three hours late arriving at Wellington this morning from Nelson, while the Tamahine did not reach Picton until 7.10 p.m. to-day. about an hour late. The C. and D. steamer Port Wellington, which left New Plymouth yesterday afternoon for Wellington, and is due here this morning, has been delayed by heavy seas and is now expected, to-morrow morning. The Union Company’s big coastal steamer Wingatui, which left Auckland last Saturday for Wellington, has been hove to off Castle Point since yesterday, and is now expected some time to-morrow. Holm and Co.’s D anera, which left Wellington on Monday night for Bluff, has been sheltering in Port Underwood, and is due back at Wellington to-morrow morning. The tankers Stcfranger from San Pedro and Osthav from Singapore were both due at Wellington to-day, but are now expected to arrive to-morrow. The Wahine was two hours late reaching Lyttelton this morning, and other vessels have been similarly delayed. The Huddart-Parker motor-liner Wanganella ran into a heavy southerly gale yesterday, and did not reach port from Sydney until 9.15 last night.
