It is learned that the French Ambassador has sought an explanation from the British Government respecting recent German orders placed with British firms for 80 aeroplane engines, and has received a reply that the Government always sought to discriminate between engines intended for military and civil use. Such discrimination was difficult in practice, especially in the case of a State disclaiming possession of any military aeroplanes. It was impossible in peace time to ban exports ostensibly of a commercial character.
