MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL. The ordinary monthly meeting of the Manawatu County Council was held on Tuesday. Present: Councillors W. E. Barber (chairman), W. E. Pearce, A. N. Morcom, Jas. Boyce, 1). W. Reid, and J. H. Perrett. Leave of absence was granted Councillor J. F. McKelvie. Inward correspondence was read and dealt with as follows: From N.Z. Railways, forwarding voucher for tram charges collected. — Received. From Public Trust Office, forwarding statement of sinking funds as at March 31, 1934. —Received. From Main Highways Board, forwarding copy of annual review' of main highways.—Left in hands of chairman. From Palmerston North Hospital Board, forwarding copy of estimates. —Received. From Kopane School Committee, asking for assistance to put in a drain crossing.—Left with engineer. From R. H. Buchanan, drawing attention to the alarming increase of rats, due to the rubbish dump owned by Feilding Borough.—Resolved to send copy of letter to the Feilding Borough Council. It was resolved: — “That chairman and treasurer sign agreement with Public Works Department for machinery.” “That application be made to Highways Board to have the Rongotea-Kai-ranga-Bunny thorpe Road classified as a main highway, and not as a subsidiary highway.” “That the following alterations be made in the Rate Roll: —W. H. Hart to R. E. Hart, Lot C, Secton 268, Noutere; E. A. Mepham to Mary I. San som, Section 149, Carnarvon; Keiller and Seifert to A. J. Lobb, Section 114 and part section 109, Sandon. County Engineer's Report. The county engineer reported on works carried out since last meeting of ; the council. Main Highways.—A detailed inspection of the Whirokiuo Bridge has been completed and drawings for the suggested strengthening of the centre spans are now' completed. The Whirokino Road has been patched with pit metal and surface metal is now being spread. Curves on the Foxton-Shannou Road are being built up with pit metal. Shannon Bridge.—ln the past a considerable amount of debris has collected under tha Shannon Bridge, tthich called for continual attention. Excesive scour had taken place under the spans and after investigation it was found that staging piles used during the construction period had been broken off below water level and were responsible for the backing up of debris. These old piles have now been drawn. The Himatangi-Sanson Road has been patched with metal from the Rangitikei River. The Rongotea-Longburn Road has ben patched with surface metal and banking from the township to the cemetery hill has been continued as the opportunity occurs. Drain cleaning and grading has been continued on all main highways. The Himatangi-Rangiotu Road has been patched and graded. The contractors have completed all foundation work. The experimental mile laid down last year has been sealed. Two miles of the meta] road has been primed with cut-back and covered with metal. Additional metal for mixing has been added to 73 chains of road and mixing had been commenced when rain set in. Ridings. —No. 1 Line, in the Awahou Riding, has been patched. Motuiti Road has been cut out with the grader and metal is being spread as opportunity occurs. Kari Kari Road is being patched and several roads have been surface graded. Kawakawa. —Surface metal being spread on Taikorea and Kellow’s Roads. The unmetalled portion of Mangawhata Road has been cut out with the grader and put into fair shape. Draining and grading has been continued on all roads. Rongotea. —Surface metal has been spread on Kopane, Green and Loen’s Roads. Watertables are being cleaned and grading continued on most roads. Carnarvon.— Grading has been done on all roads. Patching has been undertaken on Koputara and Rosina Roads. The shaping up of the unmetalled portion of Taikoria Road will be commenced in a few days. Some delay was experienced in the shipment of piles for the Makowhai Bridge, but they are now on the job and driving has been commenced. The River Bank Road will be closed until further notice. Waitohi. —Taipo and Taipo-Awahuri Roads have been patched with metal. Drains have been cleaned on these roads and all roads have been graded. Mt. Stewart. —Watertables have been cleaned nn Rakihou and Ranfurly Roads. Halcombs Road has been patched and all roads have been graded. Sandon. —Frecklington’s and MeDonell’s Roads have ben patched. One bridge on Taylor’s Line has been repaired. Drains and warertables are being cleaned On Wilson’s Road. Sanson Township—Drains have been cleaned on Cemetery Road and most roads have been graded. Main Drain Road.—Surface metal has been spread on this road and grading carried out. Metal. —285 cubic yards of metal has been carted out of the Orona River at Kopane and spread on adjacent roads. Crusher. —933 cubic yards of metal has been delivered from the plant a tthe Rangitikei River.
