WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

MEETING AT HUNTERVILLE The first meeting of the Hunter villi Women’s Institute was held on Wednesday, May 2. There was a large attendance and the president, Mrs. C. Bowick, extended a welcome to all present. Miss, Earle gave a very interesting demonstration on home nursing. The branch dealt with being the care of an aged and helpless person. She was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. The competition for the month was a plate of plain scones and was won by Mrs. Cosgrove, with Mrs. Gordon 2 and Mrs. Snellgrove 3. The June competition will be the best article made from a sugar-bag. During the afternoon Airs. Suainson sang very pleasingly “A Bowl of Roses.” Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mcsdames Dickie, Dukeson, Gordon and Miss Petrie. The singing of “Paean of Empire” and the National Anthem brought a very happy meeting to a closo. WESTMERE The May meeting of the Westmere Women’s Institute was held on Tuesday a good attendance of members being present in spite of the unpleasant

weather. Mrs. Feist was in the chair. A good deal of interesting business was dealt with, Mrs. Brownlie crave a comprehensive report of the recent federation Council meeting in Wanga- i nui and Mrs. Millen spoke on some of | Ihe resolutions which are to be discussed at the Dominion Conference. Mrs. Millen was nominated as a candidate for election to the executive committee of the Dominion Federation. A sub-committcc of girls under i twenty-one was appointed to take charge of the programme for the July meeting. It was decided to hold an “extra” afternoon meeting on Tuesday, June 5, at 2 p.m., when Airs. Simpson, of Woodville, will give a demonstration of papier mache work and other arts I and 'crafts to members who are interested in this kind of work. An appeal was made for reading matter lor the inmates of I’orirua Mental Hospital. A “potato show” in several classes, for which Air. Nelson Hughes kindly acted as judge, created great interest. Air. Hughes gave a most instructive talk on the selection of seed and table potatoes, and answered a long list of question from interested members. Results of the potato show were as follows: Three table potatoes, Airs. Dunbar 1. Airs. Z. L. Smith 2, Mis. E. Prince 3. Three seed potatoes: Miss C. Brownlie 1. Airs. Brownlie 2, Mrs. H. Prince 3. Heaviest potato: Airs. E. Prince 1, Airs. Blennerhassett 2, Airs. Brownlie and Airs. Dunbar 3. Ugliest potato: Airs. Gordon I, Miss , C. Brownlie 2, Mrs. Biddick 3. The last of the potato weights for the federation competition were handed in during the afternoon, when it was announced that the highest weight had boon gained by Airs. Al. K. Laird, who grew from her three seed potatoes a crop of 1191 b. Two other members got over J 001 b., while several others were close behind. Airs. Armstrong won an amusing competition, “A Flower Wedding.” A vocal duct, “The Day is Done,” by Mrs. Corliss and Mrs. Wilson, and a piano duct by Mrs. Cooper and Airs. Wilson were much enjoyed. The next meeting was announced for June 12, when a demonstration of electric appliances will be given. Hostesses for the afternoon were:— Mcsdames Biddick, Birch, Brown, ■ Handley, Alisses D. Brown and E. , Brown.
