PATEA

BOEING With tha approach of the winter months and the new boxing season, the Batea Boxing Association has commenced activity, and is endeavouring to fix a date for an early tournament. When the question was raise ! two months ago, it was hoped to have the local exponents of the art in training bv the end of April. Towards this end a meeting was held last week, and the selection committee was asked to draw up a programme of bouts for a tournament within the next week or so. This programme was submitted at a meeting of the committee last Tuesday evening, and after fully discussing the question it was agreed to hold over a definite date until a star bout could be arranged. The selection committee was (hanked for their work in preparing the programme of bouts. At this last meeting a suggestion was received from the Wanganui Boxing Association, to the effect that a Boxing Union should be formed to arrange a uniformity in the arrangement of tournaments, trophies and pules. Mr F. Naismith moved, and Mr McAsey seconded that the suggestion be supported, and the resolution was carried unanimously. COUNTY COUNCIL MEETING With the dismantling of the Opunake wharves the Batea Harbour Board has interested itself in purchasing the limbers for the construction of a further wharf at Batea. At the monthly meeting of th e Batea County Council, Ur. W. G. Belton presiding, the Batea Harbour Board wrote askiug for the assistance of the county engineer (Mr. J. N. Anderson), in the supervision of jhe work, which would entail the expenditure of about £lOOO. The opportunity was also given to the council to obtain some of the hardwood timbers at a greatly reduced price, and the engineer recommended that these be purchased, as this timber was hard to procure except by indenting. After discussion, the council agreed to allow the engineer to supervise the Harbour Board’s work, as long as it did not interfere with his county work. The Waitotara County Council wrote offering the council the chance of combining with other counties in the procuring of sodium chlorate at a reduction in price by 25 per cent. Members spoKe of the number of dairy factories in the Patea County "here this ragwort chemical killer could be obtained. Cr. Peat said that the •worst part of the county where ragwort prevailed was in the Kapara Killing, where again the worst propeities were owned by natives, ft was agreed that there was no necessity for the council to undertake the distribution of sodium chlorate. The Waverley Town Board asked for permission to obtain 190 yards of pit metal from the council's pit. Permission was granted, the metal to be supplied at cost price, while on the chairman ’s suggestion it was decided that the grader could also be sent lur the board ’s use on the \\ airoa Beach Koad. In preparation for the winter months and a precaution against the spoiling of county roads, the council carried the usual regulation restricting the use of motor vehicles with chained wheels on certain roads, as in other years, •with the exception of the \\ aitotara galley Koad, which was now entirely metalled. Application is to be made to tne

Mam Highways Board to have the portion of the Lower Waitotara V alley Koad from the Maungone Bridge to the Makakaho Junction scheduled a highway. . , , . The engineer (Mr. J. N. Anderson), submitted the report on the month s work as follows: - Moumahaki Biding—Several short sections of metal have been put down and roads made ready for other metalling, but the wet weather of the past few’ days has held up operations. As instructed at last meeting of your council, I have inspected Aiken s Koad, Moumahaki, where trouble Is being caused by pine roots. The ® asle method of overcoming the trouble will be to put a covering of . about 9m. over the roots and most of the necessary spoil can be obtained by cutting down a knob towards the western end of the row of pines. This work can be undertaken later in the year, prob»blv in the early spring. Kapara Riding—The offset grader team is still working m the Lpper Waitotara Valley and is doing goou work on the metalled roads. A contract has been let to Mr. A. C. Waverley Riding.—The first course ef the two sections of Okutuku Road to be metalled by Government grant has been completed and several short sections have been prepared for metalling.
