SCIENTIFIC ACTIVITIES MR. NEILL SAILS FOR ENGLAND 1 Per press Association. 1 PALMERSTON N., May Mr. J. C. Neill, field mycologist attached to the plant research station sailed in the Trojan Star from Auckland yesterday, accompanying a ship merit of gas-chillcd beef, for the purpose of continuing the study of the effect of the formation of moulds or the carcases. He will also investigate the condition of New Zealand meat, butter, cheese and fruit on its arrival Home. This undertaking follows sex era. years of close investigation into factors affecting their condition at thit end. Mr. Neill supervised the first shipment of chilled beef from the Dominion in August of last year. Mr. Neill’s trip is being carried out in conjunction with the New Zealand Department of Scientific and Industrial Research at the Cambridge low temperature station (England). Investigations into wastages in shipments of fruit have been proceeding for five or six years at Palmerston North. The point has been reached ar which it is not possible to proceed further at this end. Mr. Neill will examine the fruit on its arrival at Home aud determine what species of fungus is responsible for the trouble. Mr. Neill will represent the New Zealand Government at the third Imperial Mycological Conference in September. He intends to investigate the growing of swede seed, also peas ano beans in England and on the Continent, the object being to develop them on disease-fice lines.
