AGED SOLDIER’S DEATH

SIR lAN HAMILTON’S TRIBUTE General Sir lan Hamilton has lost a ‘‘dear old comrade” by the death at Preston, Lancashire, of Janies Campbell, aged 76, who was with Sir Jan at the taking of Kabul during the Afghan War of 1878-80. The Afghan AVar was the first of Sir lan Hamilton's varied experiences of active service. He had been in the army only five years when the campaign began. He said recently: “Campbell was a. private in my old regiment, the Gordons, during the Afghan campaign. lie was a good fellow’ and an excellent soldier. “The year following the close of the Afghan campaign I was at the battle of Majuba Hill and Campbell was with me there. I think there are now only three survivors of Majuba. Many of my old comrades correspond with me, and Campbell was one of them. He was a dear old boy and I am deeply sorry to loose swh a very old comrade.”
