LAVISH EXPENDITURE SETTLERS COME LAST FARMERS’ UNION PROTESTS I [ Per Press Association. ] AUCKLAND, Feb. 8. The Auckland Farmers’ Union executive passed a resolution unanimously: “That while this executive appreciates the action of the GovernorGeneral in presenting the site of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi to the nation, it protests against the unnecessarily lavish expenditure upon the Waitangi celebrations at a time when the Government is complaining of a shortage of funds for many necessary purposes. ’ ’ Air. J. W. Jones, who lives near Waitangi, said that for years residents who had been without road access had endeavoured vainly to have some sort of inexpensive bridge erected. Now an elaborate bridge has been built at the mouth of the tidal river in such a position as to be of no use to settlers and to block the river for navigation.
