RECORD LIKELY
LYNCHING IN UNITED STATES. LOUISVILLE, Jan. 31. The .1934 lynching record threatens to be a big one. Already several lynchings have taken place, and Hazard was the scene of another recently. Alex. Johnson, a stalwart citizen, aged 32, was accompanying two women companions when a negro, Rex Scott, 20, addressed an insulting remark to them. Johnson struck him, and, retaliating Scott shot Johnson, who may die. A mob of 300 snatched Scott out of gaol, took him to a cemetery, strung him on a tree, and riddled his body with bullets. Four rioters have been arrested. All deny complicity in the lynching.
