THE WANGANUI CARNIVAL
WITH the facility which has been characteristic of all of his pronouncements, His Worship the Mayor lays the stress on the right note in regard to the Wanganui Carnival. In his letter congratulating the Carnival Executive, published in this issue, Mr. Armstrong presses the point that the effort is not a moneymaking proposition, nor is it intended to be covert “ballyhoo’ for any particular interest. The whole programme has been fashioned with the element of gain entirely disregarded. This may be unique in these commercial days, but it nevertheless is very gratifying. In short, the City will turn host during the Carnival. The man who entertains people in the hope of adding to his own material advantage, ends by buying public contempt; there can be no profit-taking in friendships. The psychological basis for the Carnival then, is a right one. It will, it is to be hoped, encourage people not only to engage in pleasure seeking, but also in pleasure giving. Those who are able to take part in the various events will be able to do so feeling that they are acting as hosts of the City of Wanganui, and those who are not so fortunate as to be able to make an active contribution, will be able to aid by supporting those who are actively engaged. The Carnival will indeed enable residents to offer visitors to Wanganui an excellent ten days of civic entertainment, and this should enable residents; to discharge their duties to their visitors with the City’s aid. The Carnival will provide a profit without price, and if it stimulates a happier outlook and a greater friendliness among the citizens, which is the aim of the promoters, there will be rewards which, though intangible, will truly be incalculable.
