TAKAPUNA JOCKEY CLUB THE SUMMER MEETING. PROSPECTS FOR TO-DAY. (Special to “Chronicle.’*) AUCKLAND, Jin. 25. The racing at the opening to-day of the Takapuna Jockey Club 's summer meeting should be quite interesting, although in some of the hack races the fields will be on the small side. Totalizator betting will be conducted under the win and place system. A dozen remain ir the important event of the day, the Takapuna Cup, and this should be a good race, for with a couple of exceptions the horses engaged have shown form of recent weeks. The best half-dozen may comprise Master Brierly, Al aster Norval, Mungatoon, Royal Artist, Alloy and Gay Alarigold. Speedmint is omitted, although if she has freshened up she will be good enough to be in at the finish. Baroscope’s owner will be hoping for a continuation of the rain that fell in the middle of the week, in which event the Weathervane gelding may be able to reproduce his Ellerslie spring form. Master Brierly appeared to improve with every race he had at Ellerslie and he had a rare duel with Kiltowyn on the last day, going under by half a head. He has done well in the meantime and properly handled on this rather tricky track he will give a good account of himself. Master Norval raced better at the recent Auckland meeting than his unplaced results make it appear, for he was unlucky in meeting trouble in each start; he appeals. Mungatoon has disappointed in his last few outings, but Alloy and Gay Marigold are lightweight prospects of note, the latter being nicely placed, for she is a smart filly. Royal Artist com pletcs the chosen sextet, and he reads the pick of the handicap on the weights; he went well for a mile and a-quarter in his one outing at Ellerslie and he should be nearly ready now. Master Norval, Master Brierly, Gay Marigold and Royal Artist appeal most. Another good field will be seen out in the Zealandia Handicap, but on the figures there is one horse outstanding, and this is Sinking Fuiid. He won two races in the one afternoon at his last appearance on this track, seven weeks back, these events being the open sprint and the hack seven furlongs. He followed this up by running prominently in the big sprints at Ellerslie, his best effort being his third, beaten half a head, by the dead-heaters Golden Wings and Silver Streak. Sinking Fund is in to-morrow with a very handy impost and it will be surprising if he fails. Among his most formidable opponents will be Jonathan, Karangapai. Rereatu and Exaggeration. The class in the Calliope Handicap is moderate and the best seem to be Royal Appellant, Sirona. High Crest and Kelly, with the first-named having an excellent chance of breaking his sequence of second placings. Of the eight left in the hack classic, the Wynyard Plate, Boughal and Star Artist will command most support and the latter will take a lot of beating. Boughal *s defeat at Pukekohe last week caused him to lose friends but it is difficult to see him conceding Star Artist 91b. at any time. In the minor events to-morrow Kilmdar, United, Gold Pocket and Cherr King (if reserved for the Rangitoto Hark) should run conspicuously. Form horses for to-morrow are the following:— 12.0: Trial Stakes.—Killadar. Toddy’ Boy, Brown Lap. 12.42: Orewa High-Weight.—United, Alpinus. My Afoney. 1.24: Ferry Handicap.—Gold Pocket. ON HAWERA TRACKS THURSDAY’S GALLOPS. AGA KHAN IMPRESSES. The feature of Thursday morning’s work on the Hawera tracks was an excellent gallop by the Egmont Cup candidate Aga Khan over a mile, writes “Limited” in the Hawera Star. The plough track was used for fast work and was in fast order. The first visitor for next week’s meeting to put in an appearance was the Hunting Song-Wallaby marc. Cawbeen, from Hastings, who, looking in capital order, was given steady pace work. Cawbeen won a race at Waipukurau on Boxing Day and was twice second at the Hawke’s Bay meeting at 'New Year. Carfex (Vaughan) did three-quarter pace work over a couple of rounds. Chief Line (Sheilds) beat Waiwhetu (Vaughan) by four lengths in a scamper over three furlongs in 37sec. No Doubt (Vaughan), starting from the mile .post, had the pace on at the five furlong post and ran from there home in 1.6 1-5, tiring at the finish. Commencing smartly at the mile IDiagano (Robinson) and Aga Khan (Vaughan) went the first half mile in 51 lusec.. fDiagamo being pulled up shortly after passing this point. Continuing. Aga Khan finished up his mile in 1.43, his last half mile occupying 514-ssce. This was one of the smartest gallops over the journey performed on the local track this season and impressed favourably. Ingenuity (Robinson) was apportioned three-quarter pace work. The Tiger (Edgecombe) was galloped yesterday morning, registering 50isec. for four furlongs. The Tiger is nicely handicapped for the sprint event next Thursday and a return to anything like his best form would make him a formidable opponent. Haunui still shows definite signs of lameness and looks a doubtful starter. Benedictine (Vaughan) and Taitoru (Grindlay) galloped five furlongs in 1.5 2-5. Benedictine went off smartly, establishing a load of three lengths over the first two furlongs and hung on well to shade his opponent at the finish. Better placed in the early part of the gallop Taitoru could have reduced the time considerably. Paparua and Sandlark worked at hal" pace. The two-year-old Silver Wings (Vaughan) sprinted three furlongs in 36| sec St. Clara did steady work. Richfield and Fantastic worked at three-quarter pace to the two furlong peg, sprinting home in 25 l-ssec. Golden Hair and Hilary did steady exercise. Brother to High Faintin’. Round Table, the winner of the Trial Plate at Trcntham, is a three-year-old full-brother to High Faintin’, being by Grandcourt from Table Talk, by Finland from War Scare, by Martian from Gossip. It is a great family, with Bobrikoff, Highland. Finmark, Estland among its good performers. Round Table has not done much racing, but on the form he showed in the final stages of this event ho looks like being more than useful. He should stay later on.

WANGANUI JOCKEY CLUB

THE AUTUMN MEETING LIST OF NOMINATIONS For the autumn meeting of the Wanganui Jockey Club the list of nominations received last night must be accepted as satisfactory under the circumstances, especially as the local fixture comes at a time when a number of horses have concluded a rather strenuous campaign. The open events have not attracted quite as much of a response as couid have been expected, though there is just a chance that there would have been more nominated if a couple of trophies had been on offer, with a resuscitated Wanganui Cup. The sweepstake events have receded a little in favour, there being eight fewer nominations than in the corresponding events last year. Comparisons with last year's figures are as follow: —

RACING AT RANDWICK

ANNIVERSARY DAY MEETING. ADRIAN KNOX STAKES. Received Jan. 26, 10.5 p.m. SYDNEY, Jan. 26. Tho Australian Jockey Club’s Anniversary Day meeting at Randwick today was held in fine weather before a largo crowd. Results: — Kurnell Handicap.—Dame Aloab 7.12 (Simpson) 1, Tom Pinch 9.5 (Pike) 2, Some Boy 7.3 (Knox) 3. Seven started. Length and a-half; half a length. Time, 1.101 (equals the Randwick record). Havilah Handicap (for two-year olds). —Sir John 9.2 (McCarten) 1, Subsidy 7.5 (O’Sullivan) 2, Constantine 8.3 (Bartle) 3. Eight started. Five lengths; half a length. Time, I.si—a Randwick record. WELLINGTON MEETING STATISTICAL RETROSPECT. ANALYSIS OF WAGERING. After turnovers rather below anticipations of the opening two days, the Wellington Racing Club’s summer meeting was most successfully concluded at Trcntham on when an almost remarkable increase of nearly 60 per cent, was recorded on the corresponding day last year, and as a result an aggregate increase of 16 per cent, was established for tho meeting, which exceeded the expectation of most of the club’s officials. Without the change in weather during tho holiday’s racing on Alo-nday the investments must have been up some thousands of pounds more; still the club was otherwise fairly fortunate in the weather, with only the one lapse during an unsettled week, comments 1 ‘ Rangatira. ” In all the investments for the three days amounted to £110,036 10s, of which Wednesday’s contribution, of £3-1,021 10s was larger than Saturday’s (Cup Day) and compared much more than favourably with the middle day’s (tho holiday, Anniversary Day). The division between the win and place pools was £47,726 10s on the win machine for the three days and £62,310 on the place machine, the place pool having its greatest relative patronage on tihe holiday and its least on Wednesday. The same sum in stakes (£5685) was provided this year as last year, but with the improved turnovers a slight increase in stakes may bo anticipated at immediately future meetings. Besides the increase in investments the gates were also up appreciably. According to a statement made yesterday morning by the secretary (Aliss D. E. Bray) the stewards were very satisfied with the outcome of the meeting. Allowing for the rebate of 1{ per cent, on the first £20,000 of turnover, and also for the extra rebate of 1 per cent, on totalisator tax that special legislation has granted up till March 1 (when it will become reduced under extending legislation to one-half per cent.), the following is the taxation (to nearest £) that has become payable for the meeting, with the figures for the last two years given also for purpose of comparison:— 1932. 1933. 1934. £ £ £ Toto tax .. .. 4910 3528 4151 (Div. tax .. .. 4515 4131 4814 Stakes tax .. 314 284 284 Totals .. £9739 £7943 £8240 To this sum has to be added the amount of amusement tax, but the amount of this for the meeting just concluded will not be known for some days yet. NOTES AND COMMENTS (By “Kestrel”) The autumn circuit next week follows on directly after the Takapuna meeting of to-day and Alonday. The Egmont meeting at Hawera is on Thursday and Saturday, tho Taranaki meeting at New Plymouth follows a week later, on February 8 and 10, and the Wanganui meeting on February 15 and 17. Two meetings at Woodville will be separated by the Rangitikei Club’s meeting at Bulls, and the Wellington Racing Club’s autumn meeting will then be due on Alarch 15 and 17. Wanganui Nominations The list of Wanganui Jockey Club nominations which appears this morning will be accepted as giving a general idea of prospects for the rather strenuous autumn circuit ahead of owners and trainers. Woodville Nominations The excellent racing track at the Woodville course is sure to cause many owners with horses for Easter meetings to patronise the autumn meeting, which is set down for Wednesday and Thursday, February 21 and 22. Nominations arc due on Friday next, February 2. Prince Colossus. The four-year-old Prince Colossus has done exceptionally well since going into H. Dulieu’s stable last year and has won six races, besides notching several minor placings. His winnings during the past three months amount to £625, and in future he will have to to do his racing in open company. By Colossus from Lady Willonyx, Prince Colossus is bred to stay fairly well, and promotion to open company should not prevent him from achieving further success. Rulanut in Victoria. The Victoria Racing Club has refused to accept the nomination of the New Zealand-bred Rulanut for events at its autumn meeting. Some trouble over the ownership is said to be behind the decision. It will be remembered that the nominations of this colt were also refused in the spring.

Betting at Trentham The remarkable spirit in the betting on the final day of the Wellington meeting was a cause of very general astonishment and satisfaction. No one particular reason can be advanced for it, and possibly it was a ”freak” day, ll Rangatira. ••
