SUPPLEMENTARY ITEMS REVIEW OF THE VOTES WELLINGTON, Dec. 21. The Supplementary Estimates were passed in the House of Representatives this afternoon.. An item of £438 is included as a payment to the International Relief Union. The Secretary of the Treasury (Mr. A. D. Park) receives an increase in salary of £2OO per annum. The cost of paying members of the Tariff Commission is set down at £l5OO, including an additional allowance of £27C to Dr. Craig as chairman. A grant of £l5O is made to the Public Service Commissioner (Mr. P. Verschaffelt) to cover the cost of his visit to Samoa. Sir Thomas Wilford is granted £5OO to cover the cost of his return to New Zealand, and the new High Commissioner (Sir James Parr) is granted a similar amount to cover the cost of proceeding to England. A compassionate grant of £OOO is made to the widow of the late Leader of the Opposition (Mr. H. E. Holland), and £250 is provided for the expenses of Mr. Holland’s funeral. The amount of £5OO is provided for the expenses of by-elections. The Defence Estimates reveal an expenditure of £54,703. An item of £5OOO is provided for the expenses Incidental to aircraft landing grounds. The Native Rates Committee is responsible for a vote of £3OO. A vote of £3OOO appears on the Estimates for add-fens to Parliament Buildings. The payment of rentals of properties leased from owners under the small farms plan accounts for a vote of £5OOO. The Director of the Horticulture Division of the Department of Agriculture is voted £475 towards the expenses of his visit to the United States. The vote of the Department of Agriculture includes the following items:— Guarantee and bonus on export of fruit (additional), £6000; carriage of lime for bona flue farmers (additional), £5000; subsidy to manufacturers of superphosphate (additional), £20,000. Provision is made for a grant of £l5 to the Canterbury Education Board towards legal expenses incurred when resisting the Claims of the Christchurch City Council for payment of heavy traffic fees A vote of £6OOO is provided for the purchase and working of B class broadcasting stations, but part of this is recoverable. A compassionate allowance of £748 is made to the widow of the late Judge W. E. Rawson, Native Trustee. Every item of expenditure for which there was no authority in last year’s Estimate/ i/ detailed in the unauthorised. expenditure account. It shows that the amount spent under this heading was £159,558. The expenses incurred in connection with the exchange of Australian silver coin for English mintage amounted to £1772. It cost £2.956 for the visit of the Hon. W. Downie Stewart and the Secretary of the Treasury, Mr. A. D. Park, to London last year. The Electric Supply Account paid £27,500 as half the cost of compensation shared with the Auckland Electric Power Board consequent upon the termination of the board’s contract with Glen Afton Collieries, Ltd., for the supply of coal. For services in excess of the vote, the Native Land Development Account paid eiiv £41,170.
