An Exhibition Gallop.

During the course of the Hororata mceeting at Riccarton on Saturday the two Auckland Cup candidates Nightly, with his Cup pilot A. Russell aboard, and Rocket, ridden by A. 11. Eastwood, staged an exhibition gallop over a mde and a furlong. The former had a slight advantage into the straight bu: Nightly was going the better at the finish. The time, Im. 555., was satisfactory and it was a good trial on the part of both horses, though Nightly’s display was the more impressive. In the Auckland Cup Rocket will be ridden by K. Voitre. A Solid Preparation. Gold Trail had two hard races at the recent meeting at Woodville and on Saturday at Waipa another big effort, was asked of her but she camo through the ordeal well to give 151 b. to and beat the improving Emotion. Three solid races run by Gold Trail in just over a week are certainly strenuous, but, she is standing up to her work well and should strip a fit mare for Tuesday’s Auckland Cup. On Saturday morning Gold Trail ran three furlongs in 37sec. at Hastings, showing that she still has brilliancy. Death of Glare. After Glare had displayed first-class form in New Zealand for his ownertrainer, J. W. Lowe, of Trentham. and had established the record of 2.16 J for a mile and three furlongs, he was purchased for 3000 guineas by J. Truskett for Victoria. A very high opinion was formed of him, and he was expected to be successful in some of the important handicap events in Australia. Ho however, proved a great disappointment He was backed on several occasions, but failed to win a race for Tniske-tt. Ho proved difficult to train, and although he gave indications of a return to his best form in a few events he always failed to survive the final preparation. After repeated failures he was sold to the Mentone owner-trainer S. B. Ferguson for 100 guineas. Ferguson turned his attention to hurdle racing, and last June Glare won a hurdle race at Woodend, and at his next start finished second to Sub Rosa at Epsom. In both races he jumped well for a novice, and displayed pace on the flat. He was then turned out for a spell, and recently returned to Ferguson’s stable. He, however, suffered from an internal complaint, and became so bad that he had to be destroyed on December 13. Glare was bred by the Messrs. Brown on the Hunter River, New South Wales, and was sold as a yearling for 100 guineas. He was by Australian Sun from Lady Travan core. FIXTURES December 26, 28, January 1, 2 Auckland B.C.
