THEBE is always one certain way to the heart of the Irish people, and that is to get arrested and oppressed. Oppression is a first-class asset in Ireland, and both Mr. de Valera and General O’Duffy are well aware of the faet. Mr. de Valera is working “the oppression stunt” in his presentation of his case to the Irish people concerning the economic war with the United Kingdom, but his monopoly of this method of appeal is no longer to be enjoyed. General O’Duffy is very appreciative of Ihe publicity value of martyrdom, and with himself behind prison bars he is well aware that there will be a wavs of sympathy for his movement in the generous hearts of his countrymen. Politics is a combination, and sometimes a conflict, in interest and emotion. hut in Ireland emotion is the major content of polities.
